Yacht Carbon Offset has been a proud supporter of the Antigua Charter Yacht Meeting (ACYM) since 2009. Each year they take action to counterbalance the environmental impact of the show by offsetting an emission allowance for its core activities.
This year, their total carbon offset contribution is 50 tonnes CO 2 e. They estimated that this volume of emissions is equivalent to the volume of gas required to fill 12 hot air balloons – that’s a lot of emissions!
The most significant greenhouse gas emissions over the course of the five-day event are generated by the exhibiting yachts. Each yacht is consuming fuel, be it for engine or onboard generator usage, or for tenders and toys.
To compensate for the yachts’ fuel consumption, the carbon offset includes an emission allowance of between 0.5 and 1.5 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per yacht (measured in the unit of CO 2 e), depending on the size and nature of the vessel. The total emission allowance for the exhibiting yachts is 47 tonnes CO 2 e.
ACYM generously provides shuttle buses and water taxis for use by all show participants. These vehicles are available day and night to move people between the show’s three marinas, and to and from the wonderful evening networking events. An emission allowance of 3 tonnes CO 2 e has been included to help compensate for the impact of the shuttle buses and water taxis’ fuel consumption.
Supporting the Larimar Wind Power Project, Dominican Republic
To complete the carbon offset transaction, Yacht Carbon Offset is supporting the 98MW Larimar Wind Power Project in the Dominican Republic. Located on the southern coast of this Caribbean island, the project generates electricity from 29 wind turbines and delivers the power to the country’s National Interconnected Electrical System. ACYM 2024’s carbon offset contribution to this project supports the power plant’s operations for two hours.
The project’s carbon credits are verified under the Verified Carbon Standard by the approved third-party auditor, Colombian Institute for Technical Standards and Certification (ICONTEC).
